program notes
In the early 1980's in the city of Liège, Belgium, I heard a concert of works by Leo Brouwer performed by the composer.  They included PER SUONARE A DUE, which the enthusiastic audience insisted he repeat immediately.  The program also included the CONCERTO DE LIÈGE for guitar and orchestra, one of whose main themes I recall vividly.  Then some Beatles songs arranged for guitar duo, and ELOGIO DE LA DANZA performed with a dancer.  It was a musical event I will never forget.  At the time I was studying guitar with Olaf Van Gonnissen at the Academy for Musical Arts in Darmstadt.  In memory of those indelible experiences, I have composed this CONCERTO FOR GUITAR AND CHAMBER ORCHESTRA.  It expresses my love and deepest nostalgia for this wonderful apollonian instrument, and I have dedicated this composition to both my teacher Olaf Van Gonnissen and Leo Brouwer whose CONCERTO DE LIEGE was the first guitar concerto I ever heard in live performance.
